The name Don Garlits is well known by hot-rod fanatics all over the world, and for good reason. With 17 World Championship Titles, Don has made his mark on the drag racing industry. The racing legend has accomplished many feats during his time as the “King of the Dragsters” including winning the National Hot Rod Association, N.H.R.A., Nationals eight times, receiving the title of the number one drag racer in the last 50 years by the N.H.R.A. and branding his own line of record-breaking racecars, the Swamp Rats.
Named to celebrate Don Garlits southern roots, his collection of 34 Swamp Rats has been breaking records since he manufactured the very first one. The racecars have broken an astonishing amount of previously recorded top speeds, being the first automobiles in the N.H.R.A. to go over 170, 180, 200, 240, 250, 260 and 270 mph throughout the years. One of his finest creations, Swamp Rat XXX has been so celebrated in the racing community it is on display at the Smithsonian Museum of American History.
While guests to cannot view this spectacular piece of machinery, many of the other Swamp Rats are on display as well as other displays of automobile history and innovation.
